Tickets still available for community picnic

Weather will not hold back Norwin's diamond anniversary get-together.

Norwin residents attending the 75th Norwin Community Picnic are all hoping for the sun to peak out on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Idlewild Park.

"This is a rain-or-shine event," says Rosanne Barry Novotnak, president of the Norwin Chamber of Commerce.

Although Novotnak hopes to keep the weather constantly warm, the schedule for the day is going on a roller coaster ride.

Children's games usually held along the softball fields and grass areas have been cancelled, because of lack of participation. Novotnak says this may be due to children being attracted to many other things in the park, including SoakZone, Idlewild's water park.

The Thunderbucket Classic softball game, featuring the Norwin Rotary against the Norwin School District, will also be cut from the day's festivities. The game has been moved to this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Norwin High School.

One thing the community can depend on is the prizes. The annual prizes awarded to lucky residents will begin at 7 p.m. at Hillside Theatre. The main stage will hold at least 75 prizes because of the diamond anniversary, according to Novotnak.

Some prizes include a year's supply of ice cream, gift baskets, car wash and gasoline gift cards, a digital camera with printer and a boys' and girls' bicycle.

Novotnak reminds park-goers to get to the park and theatre area several hours before the award presentations to reserve a spot with a blanket or chair.

Tickets are still available throughout the community at places such as, Giant Eagle of North Huntingdon, Norwin Public Library, Irwin Bank on Main Street in downtown Irwin and on Route 30 and at the Chamber of Commerce office. Tickets are at the discounted rate of $14 for toddlers and adults 55 and older, and $15 for ages 3 to 54.

Tickets can be used any day throughout the summer during the week. Idlewild will charge an additional $6.95 surcharge if tickets are used on the weekends.

Bus tickets also are available for $3. The bus will stop at Rosendahl Electric along Main Street in Irwin at 10 a.m. and Norwin Hills Cinema at 10:30 a.m. The return bus will leave Idlewild at 9 p.m.
